AI Equals Get By

Artificial Intelligence is something that is reinventing life before our eyes. If you think about kids who are going to be ten years old this year, or even who have turned that age within the past two or three years, they will never experience life without a smart phone or slow internet. Though artificial intelligence goes far beyond what a smart phone is, smart phone applications use AI. “AI (pronounced AYE-EYE) or artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.” [1] The purpose of this research is to state how artificial intelligence is destroying authenticity of talent, specifically in music. There are less and less people who have to work for what they want these days and artificial intelligence is their accomplice in this crime. Back in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s, when music became more dominant in our society, bands had to make records and cassettes or CDs to hand out at shows and personally hand to people to get signed to a label. This process still needs to happen, however, one just used artificial intelligence from their smart phone and a record could be made just by using one finger. People needed talent to make music and now anyone could make a song because artificial intelligence does the math for the user to sound like a star. “If there is one thing computers do well, it’s math. All of music’s raw components — key, mode, melody, harmony and rhythm — can be expressed mathematically. As a result, computers can help people make music, even if they don’t know their elbow from an F clef.” [2] This is heartbreaking for real musicians who put in time and effort into their art. I look at musicians from the 80’s and say that I want to be as good as them or even better than them and become that famous. Fast forward to 2013, you do not know if you can say I want to be as good as them because chances are they are all processed pop that is made through the magic of artificial intelligence. If you look at One Direction, their second album is described using mostly computer software as the main source of power. “Their second studio album, Take Me Home (2012), is characterised by rock-inherited pop, prominent electric guitar riffs, bright synthesizers, double entendres for sexual intercourse, a homogeneoussound and message, and the pitch-correcting software Auto-Tune.” [3] The auto-tune processes pitch and keeps you in key. You could make it sound obvious and turn the correction to a high level or keep it low so it sounds absolutely natural and then nobody could tell you are using it. These features are now being used on phones and for free. An application, called uJam, lets anyone sound professional. “Make your own song within minutes and sound like a pro. Just for fun, or for serious music production. Compose, record and arrange your song. It’s free and no download is required.”[4] This states that now you could sound as professional as your idols and do it on a phone for absolutely free! Artificial intelligence is creating shortcuts and taking away authenticity from the individuals of the future. It is often said that the kids are the future, but now I feel lost in society if the kids are using these programs. Artificial intelligence seems to be great in fields of business and progress for medicine or research, but when it is put in the hands of people on iPhones or other smart phones, it creates a very lazy world and that is not progress for what we want to be as people. 1) [1] http://searchcio.techtarget.com/definition/AI 2) [2] http://www.wired.com/business/2010/06/5-mash-ups-of-music-and-artificial-intelligence/ 3) [3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Direction 4) [4] http://www.ujam.com/

Knowledge Management Systems In A Courtroom

Organization is key to running a successful business and having a steady workflow. The topic of knowledge management systems is very important for creating opportunity. However, the definition of a knowledge management system can relate to the actually organization of how a company runs itself. The point og this research is to demonstrate the importance of having data organized and readily available. “Knowledge management systems refer to any kind of IT system that stores and retrieves knowledge, improves collaboration, locates knowledge sources, mines repositories for hidden knowledge, captures and uses knowledge, or in some other way enhances the KM process.” [1] Based off this definition, there is a personal experience where a knowledge management system has been in my life. I thought this organization was just something a company should have, but clearly it is more than that. In the fall of 2013, I had an internship at the Richmond County Surrogate’s Court in Staten Island, New York. Here I had many duties, but one was working in the records room. Since technology was advancing, I had a lot of filing to do downstairs. Putting the paper documents onto a computer was something I did for hours. “The idea of a KM system is to enable employees to have ready access to the organization's documented base of facts, sources of information, and solutions.” [2] The court’s employees always needed to access these files for lawyers or lawyers had to even retrieve them. These files were sources for anyone who needed to use them in the courtroom. This proved that having a readily accessible database of important documents led to solutions for families or lawyers trying to settle or win a case within the court. The storage of this date made work at the Surrogate’s Court much easier than the way it used to be because this knowledge management system made it possible to retrieve a document in seconds, rather than having to physically search for it in the millions of papers stored in the basement of the building. The way the court was organized showed a perfect management support system. Cases were brought in and filed quickly and efficiently. “The benefits of knowledge managementsystems for organizations are clear: more satisfied and loyal customers, higher efficiency, and better insights for improving products and services. Knowledge management is the new imperative for the service and support organization.” [3] With the court, new opportunities are new cases being brought in. However, with a Surrogate’s Court, there aren’t many places to go with this kind of problem so there is not competition. However, with the loss of a family member and legal business to take care of, having an easy procedure to making the parties happy is the means of providing great service, which is what a knowledge management system is meant to provide. HRMIS

There are jobs for everybody in this world and chances are that many graduating students will be working jobs that are not even in existence today. There’s even a job out there for a person to get these new hired people and then manage them, as well as the current workers. This job goes to the human resource department. “The worksite administrator of the Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS) will manage HR processing and workflow.” [1] The HRMIS makes sure the company is in order and that all employees roles and logistics are kept in control. It is up to the HRMIS to also hire new employees that would benefit the company and help it prosper. The HRMIS needs to be organized and have a plan ready all the time. Without the HRMIS, businesses could be at a loss and out of order. This is very related to what a manager does as well. We will face the department that is HRMIS as we go to job interviews and try to become part of successful companies. With the HRMIS in charge of hiring, it has been proven that a good hiring system leads to more profit. "The survey strongly suggests that specific hiring practices and tools are linked to an organization's success." [2] Studies are proving how important HRMIS is for a business. “The study shows that in the past year the organizations with the more effective hiring systems ranked higher in financial performance, productivity, quality, customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction and retention. "This is further proof of what HR professionals have long said: Success is based on finding the right people for the right jobs." [2] Having a person in charge of all this shows what a good system is. These HRMIS even have their own system of finding certain people. “Human resource planning, personnel selection and recruiting, training and skill inventory, scheduling and job placement, wage and salary administration, outplacement” [3] are all part of the HRMIS department. Though hiring is trial and error, higher-level companies cannot afford error. These people are highly trained at what they do and need fresh faces and brains to be part of their company’s team. When students graduate, the HRMIS will determine if that person is qualified to be part of the company and help contribute to increased profits. The list above states what all-new employees go through and what the HRMIS go through. The HRMIS is a crucial part to a company that the average person does not know about. Though technology is prospering, people still run companies and a computer cannot hire a person. The average person will always go for a job interview or possibly be interviewed via video conferencing, but there is still someone that will be asking the questions and training new employees. The HRMIS could be considered a huge foundation of any company. Electronic Commerce and the Food Industry

It’s 1950 and you want to grab a bite to eat for dinner. You could not text friends to get together and head out and had to wait to get to the place to order the food. Now it is 2013 and you want to grab a bite to dinner. One could text their friends and ask them what they want to eat from the local food place. You then could text in your order from home so it is ready when you get there. This advancement of technology is just a part of a whole called electronic commerce. Electronic commerce is business conducted through the use of computers, telephones, fax machines, barcode readers, credit cards, automated teller machines, or other electronic appliances without exchange of paper-based documents.” [1] This has changed the way we carry out business. Aside from ordering food on the spot at a restaurant, local super markets are taking advantage of electronic commerce changes. “At Stop & Shop, customers are selecting products in the store and then shopping for them online. Wal-Mart is also revising its online strategy, offering same-day delivery for food items in select markets that are ordered online. General Mills has a strategy that offers gluten-free products on the Internet that cannot be found in traditional food stores.” [2] These businesses are in the shadows of Amazon and other online stores, yet they are striving just as much with the advancements of electronic commerce. Retail food stores are changing at the fastest rate. It could be said that presenting food online may be a challenge for electronic commerce. “Without the benefit of smell or taste, selling food and beverage products through the digital channel presents a host of challenges.” [3] This should not be a problem in the world we live in today and the way people eat. People know what they want from the supermarket and could easily order their groceries online without heading to the store. This argument is very weak because a person could easily browse for other foods. People are on Facebook browsing around for hours, therefore a person could search a grocery store itinerary on the Internet. It would be very interesting to see the lines at the local grocery stores begin to wane as online shopping through electronic commerce grows. I am even curious to see what it would be like to shop online for these items. By doing this assignment alone, it has already swayed me into how things are beginning to shape for the future. Electronic commerce is the direction that all businesses are being pushed toward. _______________________________________________________________________________________ [1] http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/electronic-commerce-E-Commerce.html [2] http://www.supplychainbrain.com/content/industry-verticals/food-beverage/single-article-page/article/e-commerce-has-explosive-impact-on-food-beverage-industry/ [3] http://www.gorillagroup.com/Our-Work/Areas-of-Expertise/Ecommerce-Food-Beverage

Hardware/Software

Being mobile is so important in the business world. There are countless new devices being made that make businesses strive on the road. It started with the Internet and email and has grown in unimaginable ways. One item would be operating systems. Each operating system varies depending on the computer being used. With laptops, such as a Macintosh, you upgrade to new operating systems that improve what you could do on them. If a company has all their operating systems up to date of their items, they will have the advantage with their systems. File storage websitesalso are useful with companies working with clients. When they need an item or information from a client, each party could share information on a closed website. Display monitors are important due to the information that needs to be viewed. When using tablets and smart phones, the display is incredibly important. With the correct display of LCD or whatever the case, users on the road while traveling can view emails and all types of documents due to the advancements of visuals. External hardrivesare very important when it comes to mobility because tablets and notebooks could easily break during travel. Being able to bring a small and portable item that could hold a massive amount of data to back up is very convenient and important. If someone were to lose their laptop or tablet on a business trip, that could destroy whatever business is taking place and a company could lose out on an opportunity. With this all, the storage capacity is very important to tie it all together. As stated, these mobile devices need to be able to hold lots of data. Storage capacity has been around but to be able to put it on such a small piece of equipment is perfect for the mobile journey.

Gadget

I added the +1 Gadget to my page. I went to my blog and then into the layout and into the add gadget feature. I picked the area and size I wanted and previewed my page. I placed it right under my name so if people like what they read, they could +1 it. After, I saved it. The reason I chose the +1 feature is because the idea and concept of going viral is what works today. Whether it is music or a blog, your item could make you something overnight. You want users to have instant access to your page and instantly be able to share it. The internet is limitless when it comes to making yourself worldwide and your goal should be to make it as easy as possible for people to share your page.

Social Network Monitoring

Social Network monitors are key for a lot of companies. As stated, Comcast even has professionals in the social network field that spend time strictly on these sites to find users that are talking about their product. To be more specific, they look for negative comments so they could assist the complainer and make them happy. The ability to find something based of a post is part of the AI of searching tools. This is key for the business tool I would create. Using a company, such as Radian6, Alterian, or the others listed, I could hone in on the people using my product. This idea is very similar to what Comcast does. However, mine would be from a recruiter standpoint. As stated in my Info post, which is about who I am, I stated I am going to become a coach for Beachbody.com. An idea to recruit people for my group to coach is by monitoring social networks. What I would do is search hashtags of relevant items on Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, Facebook itself, and Twitter. For example, I just completed Insanity so I would see if anyone tagged #Insanity or #Digdeep or #MaxPlyo, etc. These are all popular terms related to the program. I could then message these people and recruit them. This does not allow me to provide customer service as Comcast does, but actually grow my business and group as whole by being a recruiter. Social Networks provide endless information on anything you have to look for. When I first was getting into these workouts and programs, I used social networks to find actually people who could provide results and their personal thoughts on these systems. You cannot necessarily trust a commercial or brochure that says "Day 1" and "Day 60" with two pictures because the company will post their only success story or even lie. However, using social networks, I was able to connect with actually people who experienced the programs. These social network monitors let you create personal relationships with users and brings you deeper into the world of whatever your business or idea is.
